FAQs
::FAQs::

Here are some FAQs regarding the RPG. If you have any more questions, post a comment here or send an e-mail to the mods. We’ll be more than happy to answer any and all questions that you have.

Term Question

Q: I see abbreviations throughout the roleplaying game. What do they mean?
A: Here’s a list of commonly used roleplaying terms:

RPG: Roleplaying Game
RP: Roleplaying
RPGer: Roleplay Gamer
OOC: Out of Character, meaning you not your character.
IC: In Character, meaning your character, not you.
PB: Played By, meaning who’s portraying your character.
OC: Original Character, meaning a character that you made up.
NPC: Non-Played Character, meaning that they are not played on a regular base. All NPCs are up for adoption if you’d really like to play one of them. Talk to a mod.
OTA: Open to Anyone. This means that if someone posts in the RPG comm that anyone is allowed to jump in on the thread. Now, if two characters have already begun a thread, but it's still left OTA, ask one of the muns before jumping into it.

Hold Questions

Q: Where do I ask for a hold?
A: Right here. Just post a comment on the character you’d like held.

Q: How long do holds last?
A: One week, and then a mod will ask you if you’d still like the hold. If you do not reply to us within twenty four hours the hold will expire. If you do ask for an extension you will have three days to get an app in. Unless you are already an active member of the RPG. Then if you ask for a hold you have up to 30 days to fill out an application and send it in.

Q: Can I hold a PB?
A: No, since there are many characters that will have the same PB we’re not allowing it. For instance, Legolas and Will Turner are played by Orlando Bloom. Plus, it makes it more interesting when two characters that look so much alike run into one another.

Q: Can I challenge a hold?
A: No, it’s a first come first serve basis. Come back within 8 days and see if the hold has expired. Or pick another character from your chosen fandom and apply for them. We want to see you in the game!

Taken Character Questions

Q: Where is a list of taken characters?
A: Right here. They are listed out, in alphabetical order of their respective fandoms then characters. Same goes for the holds list which is right below the taken character list.

Application Questions

Q: Where do I send my application to?
A: Send it to pandemansion@gmail.com with the subject line of Application for Pandemansion RPG.

Q: How long before I know I’ve been accepted into the RPG?
A: The mods will get back to you when we do adds. Add dates will be posted on the main journals, as well as on the taken character list. Don’t harass the mods about your application, you’ll get a no really quick if you do. We’ll send you an e-mail letting you know that you’ve been accepted or rejected. If rejected we’ll explain why.

Q: How many days should I wait before I send another app in?
A: We ask that you wait at least two days in game before you send another application in please. We'd like to make sure that you're going to be active with your other character(s) before we accept another app. Which means that you should wait at least 10 days before sending in another app.

Q: What happens after I’ve been accepted into the RPG?
A: One of the mods will send invites to you for the main community, and to the OOC community. Then you should post an introduction of yourself and your character into the OOC community and any plots you’d like to see for your character.

Q: Why haven't I gotten my invites to the communities?
A: Something in IJ's programming doesn't send you an e-mail when invites have been sent out. We will send them! As soon as you are accepted into the RPG you'll have invites to the comms. Do not join the comms as you will get invites. Just go to the navigation bar up top, go to Asylums and from the dropdown menu select Asylum Invitations.

General RPG Questions

Q: Why a panfandom RPG?
A: Well the modly ones play a variety of different fandom characters. We thought it’d be fun, and thought it be even more fun to let others get in on the madness.

Q: Can I create an original character for this RPG?
A: The answer is no, sorry. There are plenty of fandoms out there with lesser known, smaller characters. So, technically you would be creating an OC. For instance, say you’re really big into the Harry Potter fandom, and you want to play Lisa Turpin. Hardly anything is known about her, but she’s canon. Be creative, and don’t be afraid to bring any fandom character into the game.

Q: Can I bring in a character from a fandom that's dead in canon?
A: Yes, you may as long as they enter pre-death. For instance, Sirius Black from Harry Potter can appear in the mansion as he falls through the veil. Duke, from Doom (movieverse), can appear pre getting pulled down into the grate by an imp. There are endless possibilities here, and take advantage of those.

Q: If my character is from an anime/manga/cartoon/game am I allowed to use icons from the anime/manga/cartoon/game or do I have to use a PB?
A: Either way is fine really. If you feel more comfortable using icons from the anime/manga/cartoon/game that’s fine! If you’d like to use a PB, that’s fine too! We’re pretty flexible on this, just if you do choose a PB for a character we ask that they are some type of celebrity. Not a MySpace celebrity or a self PB.

Q: Why no MySpace people?
A: We know a lot of RPGs have this rule, and we’re no exception. However, if you feel strongly about using a MySpace PB we’ll take it on a case-by-case basis. If the mods feel that it really represents your chosen character we’ll more than likely accept the PB.

Q: If my character is a PB and they interact with a character who's from a game/anime/manga/cartoon will the character from a game/anime/manga/cartoon be 2D to them?
A: No. Generally in panfandom RPGs all characters are 3D. If you happen to be confused on this, look at the interactions between Dr. Grimm and Kakashi.

Q: Is there any sort of language barrier at the mansion?
A: No, there is not. Read this thread for more information on that.

Q: What sort of characters are you looking for?
A: Any and all characters from any fandom. It can be a small fandom like, Tail of the Moon, or a larger scale fandom like Supernatural. Use your imagination, and have fun with it!

Q: How does time work here?
A: Every 4-5 days a time change will be done by one of the mods. We’ll announce who’s entered, what’s going on with the mansion, and other general announcements. If you’d like something announced, comment on one of the time changes and we’ll announce it the next time change.

Q: Do I have a loverly bunch of coconuts?
A: Nope.

Q: Will or could characters from different fandoms know one another? Example: Ash is a fan of The Sandman comics, however he greeted Dream and did not recognize him.
A: No, they will not. The knowledge is there, somewhere in the back of their mind but they can't place a finger on where they know the person/thing/being from. It'll just be a feeling that they're missing something.

Game Premise Questions

Q: Why are they at the mansion?
A: Cosmic forces beyond their control. Some gods/goddesses thought it’d be funny to see all of these random people tossed together in this mansion on the island.

Q: Can they leave the mansion?
A: Sadly, no, they cannot. They may explore the island around the mansion, which grows accordingly to the mansion. One day your character might step out of the mansion, and the beach is right there. Then on another day your character might step out and there's nothing but a jungle outside of the mansion. The mods will announce in the day change what's going on with the island, as well as the mansion.

Q: Where is the mansion located at?
A: On an island somewhere, think LOST but not really. There are no ‘Others’, there is no escape unless the meddling gods/goddesses see fit for you to leave. But the price you pay for leaving? Well…that’s up to them.

Q: What sort of amenities are in the mansion?
A: Look no further than right here. It should give you a clear idea of what’s in the mansion. The mansion itself is a 'being' (for lack of a better word). It knows the needs of the inhabitants, and will fulfill those needs.

Q: What do I do when my character enters the mansion?
A: Make an entry post for them. They’ll all enter through the gates of Purgatory, meaning they’ll either fall into the fountain, or they’ll land on the other side of the fountain. Be creative with it, and have fun! A mod’s character, be it an NPC or a main character, will greet them. Now, we're not opposed to a character/characters entering without the aide of the gates, however, most character(s) should enter through the gates.

Q: What’s up with the mansion?
A: Think Rose Red. Ever changing, and ever evolving. The island is the same way as well. However, the mansion won’t purposefully try to kill you. Accidentally maybe, purposefully no. Your character(s) room will always be in the same place, but it might take them longer to get there than it did a week ago. We modly ones will put up what’s going on with the mansion during the time change.

Have any more questions? Ask away!

This maybe a stupid question but... If your character has some sort of power does it still work in the mansion? Are HP characters still wizards or is their magic nulled in the mansion, etc?

No, it's not a stupid question at all! Yes, if a character has a certain power it will work within the mansion, and on the island. So, if you applied for an HP character, they would still have their wands, and their magic. As long as they 'harm none too bad'.

Okay, so this really is probably a stupid question, and I think I know the answer, but I want to make sure before I make an application. Can someone use a character from post-canon? Like after the series ends? Or does it need to be sometime during the series?

No, it's not a stupid question at all. Hannibal King, Abigail Whistler, Takato, and Dr. Grimm all are from post canon. So, that's totally fine if you want to bring someone in after a series has ended.

Nope, sadly no coconuts. You know, if I had my way about it, I'd totally have a loverly bunch of them personally. *nods*

Okay, so. I intend to app Kryten (from Red Dwarf), however, he does not have a DOB in canon; is he still playable here, as the app asks for a DOB to be given?

Yes, he is still playable. If you want to make up a DOB that will be fine, or you can leave it blank and provide us with his age at the very least.

I play Sirius Black, and he doesn't have a canon DOB either, so I personally made one up. Either way you'd like to do is fine!

Can we reference other "fandoms" in posts?

Like can we reference "The Wizard of Oz" as a play/movie? Or if in canon a character references movies (such as Star Wars) can the character here make the same references?

You may reference other fandoms in posts!

Characters will not completely forget their previous lives. There will also be movies and books in the mansion for your charrie to watch and read, so we encourage the mention of other fandoms really!

BUT! If say your charrie mentions someone from Star Wars or the fandom Star Wars itself, they will not be able to quite place the person from the fandom they know. If Darth Vader was to come through the gates and meet up with your charrie it will be that nagging feeling, that 'I know I should know you but...' or they might not even have that feeling at all.

Did I make sense?

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but since this *pending my application* is my first panfandom rp, why are certain fandoms forbidden?

(I didn't plan on using them, just curious.)

Not a stupid question at all!

Most fandoms are forbidden because their authors/directors/all around makers do not wish for them to be in play. Anne Rice, for example, has specifically forbidden any of her characters to be played in any kind of role-playing game. Now some people may go ahead and play them anyway, so you may see some of these charries around, we just like to make the authors happy and not get into trouble!

I've poked around, but I haven't seen a list of forbidden fandoms on here. Is there a list, or is it just answered app-by-app?

We have a small list on our <a href="http://asylums.insanejournal.com/pandemansion/1046.html#cutid1>Taken/Held Character's page.</a> Although I feel that we are forgetting some fandoms...so if you see any anywhere else please let us know!

May I bring in a fictionalized character of a real person? IE, King Herny from Tudors? And if so, would I be able to bring him in as he was living, like "drop him in" in the first season for example?

Sorry if those are stupid questions.

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]pandemod
2008-07-08 01:13 pm UTC (link)
Yes, you can! As long as it is a fandom like the Tudors, John Adams or 1776 we're totally fine with that! Yes, he can be brought from the era he was living and be dropped into the mansion during the first season of the show.

No, there isn't anything as a stupid question!

Okay, I made an entrance post and I made 13 land on the beach, is this okay or should I rewrite? Sorry, I completely forgot about them being drawn to the fountain. :X

Modly Sarah here, and it's totally fine hun! Like, if you bring in another character we'd prefer them to come through the gate, but we've had characters who didn't enter through the gates before so no worries at all!
